For the first time in school history, Southern Durham has won a boys basketball state championship.
The Spartans won the second half, erasing a one-point halftime deficit and claiming a 54-47 win over Mooresville at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem on Saturday.
Mooresville led 24-23 at halftime, but Southern Durham outscored the Blue Devils 16-12 in the third quarter and 15-11 in the fourth quarter to claim the win.
A.J. Morman Jr. led the way for Southern Durham with 16 points. He added five rebounds, three assists, and one steal, earning Most Outstanding Player honors for the East.
Keyonee Terry was named the Most Valuable Player of the state championship game after scoring 13 points, pulling in seven rebounds, and recording four steals.
Martin Ashley added 10 points for the Spartans.
Mooresville’s Nolan Ericson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the West team after recording 11 points, two rebounds, and two steals.
Jordan Walton also scored 11 points for Mooresville.
Prior to the game, the NCHSAA awarded the Sportsmanship Award to Carson Schaen of Mooresville and Martin Ashley of Southern Durham.
Southern Durham finished the season with a 28-3 overall record. Mooresville’s final record was 27-3.
